CBT - Compulsory Basic Training

CBT – Compulsory Basic Training

If you want to ride a moped or motorcycle in the UK, you’ll need to complete a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course. This one-day course is the first step for new riders and is required by law before you can ride on the road.

At the end of the training, you’ll receive a CBT Certificate (DL196), which is valid for two years. With this certificate you can:

  • Ride a moped (50cc) from age 16 with L plates

  • Ride a motorcycle up to 125cc from age 17 with L plates

  • Continue training towards your A1, A2, or full motorcycle licence (depending on age and experience)

👉 For more details, check the official guidance on age-specific motorcycle licence laws.
